Antique Victorian Silver Amethyst Pearl Bug Brooch Pin
Bugs, moths and butterflies, beetles and spiders, they have all been featured in art and design for millennia, sometimes jewelers even crafted jewelry of the carcasses and wings of actual critters.
This wonderful bug dates to the late Victorian era, it is fully hand crafted and set with a large, oval faceted amethyst, two little pearls and two red glowing eyes that might be either garnet or glass. The amethyst measures 19.5x11.4x8.2 mm. The brooch measures 19.9 mm north to south and 37 mm across, it is 11 mm deep and weighs 7.6 grams. This wonderful and cheeky bug has wonderful engraved details all over, it is marked with an Austro-Hungarian import assay mark which was struck between 1872-1902.
