Art Deco 18k Gold Sapphire Snake Collar Necklace Omega Ouroboros

Depending on where you look, the Ouroboros represents fertility, eternity, the cyclical nature of the year or even the soul of the world. One thing is certain, this symbol of the snake biting its tail is one of the earliest known motifs in iconography.

This fantastic and fantastical collar necklace was made in France in the 1920s when the world was in the grip of a fascination for all things Egyptian, brought about by Howard Carter’s finding of the tomb of the Boy King Tutankhamun. The collar was hand crafted in 18 karat yellow gold and set with a large oval cabochon sapphire which represents the Monocle of the Cobra. The sapphire measures 19.5x15x8.9 mm and weighs approximately 21.87 carats; it is carved with scales on the bottom and around the sides. The collar is marked with the French Owl mark on the clasp which indicates a gold content of 18 karat; it weighs 79.00 grams. The collar is about 13.8 inches around the neck and on the right person it sits just perfectly with the stone nestled just so, but it is on the smaller side. The hinged sides allow it to go on and off with ease and the safety catch makes sure it won’t escape and slither away!
