Antique Silver Engraved Bird & Flowers Locket

This beautiful Silver Engraved Bird and Flowers Locket is such a unique piece. I don’t believe you’ll find its like, unless it has a doppelgänger out there! It’s also charmingly romantic and pretty. Clearly, the designer had a keen artist’s eye and a deep love of nature.
Unlike the traditional oval or round shape, this curious locket is rectangular, with the two shorter sides gently curving in a convex-concave relationship to each other. The effect is both gentle and geometric; its shape could almost suggest Art Deco, even though it was made years earlier, around 1880! Even more interesting, the artist has divided the pictorial motif in half, diagonally, with the upper portion exhibiting a romantic spray of delicate flowers and a butterfly hovering above, and the bottom portion showing a long-beaked bird resting on a branch, perhaps bamboo. There is also an unusual addition of a diamond shape at the very bottom, which is a mystery to me, maybe a hut in the distance? The embossment is wonderful, especially as the bird and diamond are raised in relief, seeming to be clues to some important symbolism. Inside are two oval frames, ready for any photo or piece of art that tickles your fancy. This fabulous locket weighs 30.5 grams and measures 61 mm high by 29 mm wide, with a depth of 7.2 mm. It tests as silver.
