The humble Belt was of great symbolism for the Victorians, not only because the loop represented continual, everlasting love, but the fastener expressed fidelity and a closely guarded bond. Belts were frequently used as motifs on rings and bracelets, but they were especially apt for lockets, where a photo of a loved one or a lock of hair was kept as a dear memento of love.
This lovely Silver Engraved Buckle Locket, made in Birmingham, England in 1880, is the epitome of Victorian sentimental symbolism. Depicted on the front cover is a buckled strap running the length of the locket. In the background is a dense growth of ivy, which was another important symbol, representing love and marriage. The engraving is gorgeous and the patterning is wonderful, as the juxtaposition of the two motifs is quite appealing. The back cover is unadorned, except for hallmarks: the Anchor, the Lion, ‘F’ for 1880, and the maker’s mark ‘H&W.’ . Inside are two oval frames to house your photos. This beautiful locket is a very wearable size, measuring 59 mm high by 14.4 mm wide and it weighs 15.7 grams.
