Early paste is a beautiful thing to behold. Made to mimic diamonds by candlelight, it was so popular when it first came into being that the jewelry wasn’t that much less expensive than it’s diamond cousins.
This piece of paste jewelry is particularly beguiling. Hand crafted in France in about 1820, this early cross drips with sparkly goodness. The pendant measures 67.8 mm from top to bottom and 32.7 mm across, it is closed backed and marked with the French boar’s head mark for silver as well as a French makers mark. This gorgeous pendant weighs 11 grams.
The hand cut, black dot pastes glitter and sparkle, so much like the real thing that most viewers will be completely fooled. I’ll never tell, and neither should you!

Have you ever been to Scotland, seen the light sparkling off of Loch Ness, breaking through the mists of an early, breezy morning? Have you seen the mountain peaks of Glencoe, the tips of the Three Sisters, fronted by the dazzling expanse of Loch Leven? Have you visited the Isle of Skye, a patchwork of sandy beaches, soaring mountains and windswept moorlands? If you have, then you know that this Cross would fit in perfectly there, it’s blue and white enamel like the wild sea and sky, it’s Celtic lines an echo of the land and its people.
This fabulous cross was hand crafted in Victorian times, around 1880, when Scottish art and culture were all the rage in the courts of London. The cross is large and makes a fabulous statement piece. The enamel is as close to perfect as you can get on a piece this age. The cross measures 88.2 mm from top to bottom and 52.5 mm across, it weighs 11.8 grams. This unmarked cross tests as sterling silver.

In 1781, the British Army, led by Lord Charles Cornwallis, surrendered to George Washington at Yorktown in Virginia. It was October, 1871, the woods around Yorktown must have been bright with the oranges and reds of a Virginia Autumn as they rang with musket-fire. When the women came out to help the wounded, one or more of them may have been wearing a ring just like this one.
Hand crafted around 1780, this fantastic cross is set with six flat cut garnets set in 12 karat gold. It is further set with four natural river pearls. All of the garnets are deeply set with closed backs and care should be taken to keep this cross dry as the foil behind the stones can rust if it gets very wet. The stones average 7.5x6.5 mm and the cross overall measures 51.1 mm from top to bottom and 34.8 mm across. I couldn’t tell you where this one was made, I purchased it in London and it’s possible that it’s English in origin. This cross weighs 4.5 grams, it is unmarked but has been carefully acid tested.
This early cross is a real beauty and is loaded with history!

This unique locket-backed pendant has a lot of charm! It was hand crafted in the Georgian era of 18 karat gold and agate and is set with a lovely turquoise cross at the front. The reverse is a locket containing a small portrait under beveled glass. This wonderful heart shaped pendant measures 24.5 mm from top to bottom and 19.9 mm across, it’s 8.5 mm thick. This unusual piece was made in about 1830, probably in England, and weighs 4.6 grams.

I usually pass on fobs that are uncarved, as this one is, but I was taken in by this smooth oval of brightly flecked bloodstone and the lovely Maltese cross design on top!
This wonderfully rendered bloodstone fob was hand crafted in Chester, England in 1912 of 9 karat gold kissed with a rosy hue. The top has a beautiful Maltese cross set within arches of gold. This fob would make a wonderful pendant and is of a good size at 30 mm high and 18.6x11.8 mm on the face, the bloodstone itself measures 15.1x10.3 mm. This fob weighs 5.1.

Mizpah is a beautiful word, steeped in history and time, as it originates its meaning from the bible. It’s a word that wishes another good luck and safe return as they will be gone for a while, sailing on the seas, or traveling across lands. During the Victorian era, crossing the Atlantic took around 7 – 10 days. Ships would typically sail off at Liverpool or Queenstown and land in New York Harbor. During a time of world exploration, sea travel, and war, Mizpah became a symbol of romance, desire, and chivalry. To gift this ring to another meant they were indelible on your heart, and with this ring they could find comfort when away.
This Victorian Mizpah ring was handcrafted in Chester, England in 1886. It’s a simple 18 karat gold band with the romantic phrase, “MIZPAH” across the face. It weighs 3.6 grams and is a size 7.25. The ring face measures 8 mm north to south and the band width narrows to 3.3 mm at the back. This ring has been fully hallmarked as it bears the crown mark for England, the mark for Chester, the gold purity mark, “18”, and the date letter, “c”.
As you can see from my shop, the romantic in me adores these sweetheart rings! What a charming way to court the one you love.

I was chatting with a friend at a fair in central London on a Sunday morning when this cross caught my eye and just wouldn’t let it go. I asked her to hold it and once I had it in my hands there was no letting it go. The smoothly carved white chalcedony, the wonderful inscription, the age and history seemed to seep into my skin and I just had to have it. For you, of course.
This fantastic Georgian Maltese Cross pendant is on the larger side of things. It is set at the center with hair that’s been carefully plated. The reverse bears the engraved message “E.R.W. Ex dono J.W. June 19th, 1832”. An ‘Ex Dono’ is a gift given from one person to another and so I suspect that rather than being a memorial piece to commemorate a death, this cross was actually just given as a gift. The gold fittings have been carefully acid tested as 15 karat gold and piece is in much better condition than I will be at 187 years old! This pendant cross measures 52 mm top to bottom and 41 mm across and weighs 14.9 grams. It was made in England in about 1832.

The term 'Mizpah' is found in Genesis 31:49, it means 'watchtower' and is used as a blessing, meaning "May the Lord keep watch between you and me when we are away from each other". You just know that those sentimental Victorians had to use this romantic and wonderful phrase in their art and jewelry! This ring would likely have been considered a 'sweetheart ring' and would have been given by a gentleman to his lady love interest to show his intention to court her.
This charming Mizpah ring is hand crafted in 9 karat gold. It was made in England in about 1900. The ring is a size 6 US and measures 8 mm wide and 18.7 mm across the face, it weighs 5.1 grams. This unmarked ring has been carefully acid tested as 9 karat gold.
I just fell in love with this sentimental sweetheart of a ring!

The average life expectancy of a woman born in 1800 in England was about 35 years. By comparison, dear Mary Ann Gillett’s life of 67 years must have seemed quite long and luxurious. Her life was celebrated with the construction of this amazing locket which contains a lock of her hair clasped with seed pearls and gold wire, opposite her hair is an elaborately engraved plaque with her name and the date of her death.
This stunning locket is in amazing condition, likely due to living most of its life in its original fitted box. The front is set with ten pearls and a banded agate and decorated in rich black and white enamel, it reads ‘In Memory Of’. The back of the locket is equally beautiful and showcases a spray of ivy leaves (sorry, we could have cleaned it better!). This locket measures 54 mm north to south and 31.8 mm across, it’s 10.9 mm thick and weighs 24.4 grams; it has no hallmarks, but careful acid testing reveals it to be made of 18 karat gold. This beautiful piece was hand crafted in England in about 1874. The interior inscription reads: ‘Mary Ann Gillett, died 20th Aug..st 1874, Aged 67’. The locket is presented in it’s original fitted box lined in blue velvet, together the locket and box weigh 50.6 grams.
The presence of white enamel on memorial pieces sometimes symbols that the person was unmarried, perhaps the reason Mary Ann lived to such a ripe old age was that she didn’t have to go through the perils of childbirth?

Sitting in the glassed-in sunroom of an English Garden flat is really the best place to buy your jewelry. Nothing does as right by jewels as sunlight. I was sitting at a round glass dining table in such a room, in such a flat, on such a sunny day when the lovely lady who was showing me her wears carefully unwrapped this stunningly beautiful pendant. I immediately held it up in my hand to get the full effect of the ‘light of day’, plaque á jour enamel. Gorgeous.
This fantastic pendant was hand crafted in 18 karat gold and features a praying Virgin Mary at the center, she is surrounded by blue plique windows and clusters of red plaque flowers. The plique does have a little few areas of damage, as they so often do, most notably there is a small bit of enamel missing at the very top and there is a very tiny hole at the bottom right, I was happy to forgive it because overall it’s a very special piece. The top bale is marked with the French eagle’s head mark and a French makers mark. The pendant measures 30.4 mm north to south and 18.6 mm across, it weighs 2 grams.
Just a note, the dark portion of enamel at the bottom of the pendant in the first couple of photos is from the poster tack that we use in shooting our pictures, there’s no damage or discoloration in this area.

Swift & Fisher was established around 1912 by Joseph H. Swift and Harry W. Fisher. They were known for making ecclesiastical goods and religious articles in Attleboro, Massachusetts. Harry Fisher came from a family of jewelry manufacturers, including his father, Clarence Fisher, and five uncles in the local area. Their business was eventually acquired by Alviti Creations, which is still in production today.
This is an engraved religious oil stock with a ring. It’s engraved with the letters “OI” which stands for the Latin “Oleum Infirmorum” or “oil of the sick”. An olive oil would have been used by the bishop of a diocese for use in the sacrament of anointing the sick. This sacrament gives grace for the state into which people enter through sickness, it forgives sins, renews confidence in faith, and strengthens the will against discouragement and despair.
This silver ecclesiastical ring was handcrafted in America around 1915. This piece measures 21.6 mm high and 22.7 mm in diameter, and it weighs 29.4 grams. The top of this ring unscrews, revealing a cloth and place for the anointing oil to be placed. The ring is a size 11.5. It bears the silver fineness mark, “STERLING” and the maker’s mark, “SF” with an arrow through the initials – which is the mark for Swift & Fisher.
Oil was a very integral part of people’s lives. It was used in cooking, for making sure lamps were lit, as a healing agent in medicines, for beauty, and for anointing guests and welcoming them into the home.
This piece is also engraved with the letters, “IHS”, which are the first few letters of “Jesus” or “ΙΗΣΟΥΣ”, in Greek. Later, these letters were mistaken as an abbreviation, eventually taken to mean, “Iesus Hominum Salvator” or “Jesus, Savior of Men”.

Signet rings began in ancient Egypt. Pharaohs, religious leaders, and nobility wore rings that were flat on one side and decorated with symbology unique to the wearer. Most people were illiterate so a seal as a signature assured authenticity. Seals date back to Mesopotamia, around 3500 BC. It was the Egyptians however, that crafted the idea of a seal into a ring. Cut to a few thousand years later, and we have the Victorian Era. Signet rings were used by the elite to show wealth and fashion, as well as for practical purposes like signing documents. The ring face might express a coat of arms, a set of initials, a family crest, or a motif that was strictly used by the owner. These rings weren’t just worn on the pinky, they were mounted onto chains or worn on a pocket watch.
This Victorian signet ring was handcrafted in England around 1850. It features a shield-shaped motif with an agate intaglio at the center with engraved accents on the shoulders and the band. The white agate showcases a cross intaglio. The ring face measures 10.2 x 12.1 x 2.6 mm off the finger and the band width is 2.3 mm at the back. This ring bears no marks and has been acid tested at 15 karat gold. It weighs 3.0 grams and is a size 5.5.
This ring would look handsome on the finger of a gentlemen. It would also look quite fabulous hanging from your favorite gold chain and clasped around your neck!

I woke up the other morning, it was later than usual. The day’s light was out and the coolness of winter had settled into the ground. I wore this pendant, round and golden like the sun, a parallelism and beautiful cliché all in one. Gazing out my back-porch windows I saw that the frost had swathed the grasses and drench the leaves in glittering ice crystals. Birds chattered as they perched on the feeders, flirting and racing around, making me laugh, making the pendant that hung around my neck catch the sunlight. It was all quite the sight to see.
This large and weighty antique Belle Epoque pendant was handcrafted in France around 1900. It’s a round pendant that features a beautiful woman with long golden locks carrying a bundle of fabric (or the Virgin Mary carrying a baby? We weren’t sure!). This elegant piece measures 49.5 mm north to south and 38.7 mm across. It weighs 16 grams. It bears the maker’s mark, “DECHAMPS” and the French eagle’s head mark, indicating it was made in 18 karat gold and assayed in Paris.
I wear it with a thin dark pink ribbon strung through the bale. It gives it that little something extra. Now it’s your turn to make it your own.

He told her he’d be back. She waited. The weeks turned to months and the months turned into a year. He was at sea, at home on the wild waves of the ocean. She never lost hope as he was always with her, hanging from a chain clasped around her neck, his handsome face in a photograph. He had gifted it to her as a symbol of devotion, of fidelity. MIZPAH, the romantic biblical phrase expressing safe return while being apart, was embossed on the front of her locket. After a year, he returned unharmed, and happy to be back to her, his sweetheart.
This antique silver locket was handcrafted around 1880. The front of this piece is embossed with the word, “MIZPAH”. Inside this oval locket are two frames lined in turquoise fabric. Overall, this piece measures 48 x 32 x 9 mm and it weighs 21.3 grams.
The thing about lockets is they become yours. They hold your photographs. They keep your secrets. They know your meaning. Their beauty and history is just a plus.
Mizpah is Hebrew for ‘watchtower’ and is mentioned in the bible story of Jacob and Laban, who made a pile of stones to mark an agreement with God watching as their witness, it means “may the Lord watch between thee and me when we are apart, one from the other”.

From Genesis 31:49:
And Mizpah; for he said, The Lord watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another.
Oh, those lovely sentimental Victorians, they did love any kind of symbolism, whether it was ivy leaves to say ‘I cling to thee’ or flowers to express ‘forget me not’, from horseshoe for luck to hearts and birds for love. They were especially fond of the term ‘Mizpah’ and a locket like this would have been given from one lover to another to indicate their endearment during a period of separation, or sometimes as a mourning token when separated by death.
This fantastic Mizpah locket is one of the nicest that I’ve ever had the pleasure of owning. It is fully repousséd on the front with a deep pattern and the word ‘Mizpah’ and is beautifully engraved on the back. The locket is a wonderful not too big, not too small size and is hand crafted with wonderful detail in 9 karat gold. It measures 45 mm long and 28.7 mm across, and weighs 11.4 grams. I walked through the cathedral of Notre Dame, noting the violets and blues of the stained glass. I stood beneath the ribbed vault, listening to my footsteps echo off the ancient stones. I stopped at the north rose window, a stained-glass masterpiece from the 1200’s called the Glorification of the Virgin Mary with Kings and Prophets. I grasped my pendant. It felt cool in my hands as I gazed at the very center of the window display. Mary sat on a throne with a fleur-de-lis scepter, surrounded by doves and angels, as she held her infant son. I was lucky enough to wear her around my neck.

I remember exactly where I was when I found this one. It was early, as most shopping days are, at the fairgrounds of the gigantic Newark Antiques fair north of London. I came prepared, with a mug of black coffee and a lemon slice from the Café nearby. It was spring, so a jacket was required, I donned my long black trench, feeling very Sherlock Holmes, on a mission. My mission ended abruptly as I was distracted by a stall laden with Victorian goodies, including this very necklace.
This antique Victorian necklace was handcrafted around 1890 in England. It features a double heart motif tied together with a bow, with two doves holding a flower. The romantic word, “MIZPAH” is featured front and center and the bible verse it’s based off of is engraved on the hearts. The front of the necklace measures 17 x 37 x 7 mm. This piece weighs 6.2 grams and measures 17.5". It bears the gold purity mark, “9ct” and a maker’s mark that reads, “W.Bros”. Most likely this piece started life out as a brooch and chain and they were married to make this beautiful and very wearable necklace, both are period pieces.
You never know what you’re going to find when shopping in London, but, my oh my, do I have such good luck!

Growing up, there was a beautiful painting that hung above my bed of an angel guiding two children across a broken bridge that lay over perilous waters. I found this pendant in Paris, depicting the same scene from the one in my childhood. I did some digging and found that the inspiration for these guardian angel paintings and motifs, that thrive in churches, nurseries, and hospitals today, stems from a bible verse. Psalms 91:11 reads, “For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.” From the year 1400 until 1900, these depictions were usually of an angel watching children as they neared the edges of cliffs. It wasn’t until 1900, when an unknown German artist decided to use a bridge in his artwork, and this trend took off.
This antique silver pendant was handcrafted in France around 1890. It features a repousse guardian angel motif on an octagonal setting. This pendant measures 82 x 64.4 mm and it weighs 28.8 grams. It bears the maker’s mark, “MR” and it has been acid tested. This very large pendant may actually be an ornament, but personally I have no issue wearing such a thing around my neck.
This heavenly pendant would be a divine First Communion or birthday gift. It’s a stylish token of faith with historic value.

Mizpah is steeped in history and time as it originates from the bible. The word refers to wishing good luck and safe return to the other as you must be apart for a while. “May the Lord watch between thee and me while we are apart, one from the other”, known as the Watchtower. During a time of world exploration, sea travel, and war, Mizpah became a symbol of romance, of desire, and of chivalry. To gift this ring to another meant they were indelibly marked on your heart, and with this ring they could find comfort when apart.
This antique gold MIZPAH ring was handcrafted in Birmingham, England in 1915. This ring is a size 8 and it weighs 3.8 grams. The stars were bright on Christmas Eve as she walked up the stone steps of the church. The traditional evening service was about to begin. She wore this cross with its diamonds and gold, along with her velvet green dress, as she stood with the rest of choir. They sang in harmony, Silent Night. They sang softly as the children in the congregation slowly walked up the center aisle with candles in their hands, giving light to the darkened room. She watched the crowd settle in, as the candlelight made her gold glow and her diamonds sparkle, waiting for the celebration to begin.

The cross is a symbol of love, faith and devotion. It’s a symbol of loyalty, of lifestyle, and of humility. This cross is decorated with close set crimson garnets, each one with a fiery life of its own. It's a Victorian twist on a timeless classic. This type of garnet jewelry is referred to as ‘Bohemian’, as it is set with garnets that originated in Bohemia, what we know today as the Czech Republic. Bohemian garnets are a deep, brick red. The use of these garnets was widespread in the 1800s, but they’ve been used in Western European jewelry from as far back as the 6th century.
