Some rings seem to carry a little movement within them, as though the gold itself had been gently coaxed into life. This one curves and curls in graceful scrolls, wrapping around a line of glowing rubies like a ribbon caught mid-twirl. The stones burn with that unmistakable raspberry red so beloved in late Victorian and early Edwardian jewelry, while tiny diamonds sparkle softly between them like scattered points of light. It is a ring full of charm and vitality, romantic, expressive, and unmistakably of its time.
Handcrafted in England in 1903, this antique ruby and diamond ring is made in 18 karat gold and fully hallmarked with the crown, “18,” the Birmingham anchor, the date letter “d” for 1903, and maker’s mark “W&JS.” The ring is set with five rubies totaling approximately .25 carats, including a center ruby measuring about 3 x 1.4 millimeters (approximately .09 carats), two rubies measuring about 2.3 x 1.5 mm (approximately .12 carats total), and two smaller rubies measuring about 1.5 x 1 mm (approximately .04 carats total). They are accented by six rose-cut diamonds measuring about 1 mm each, adding delicate flashes of light throughout the design. The ring measures approximately 7.5 mm north to south across the face, 20 mm across the top of the setting, and stands about 1.6 mm off the finger. The band measures about 2.8 mm wide. It weighs 2.2 grams and is currently a US size 10.
What makes this antique Victorian ruby diamond ring especially appealing is its lively personality. The scrolling goldwork gives the design a sense of motion and playfulness rarely seen in such a petite jewel, while the warm gold and glowing rubies make it feel instantly at home among other antique rings. It’s the sort of piece that looks as though it has always belonged to someone and is simply waiting to belong again.
