Antique Carved Sardonyx Opening Ring Locket Poison

Poison was the killer of choice amongst the ancient Romans and Greeks, it has been used for millennia, really, although some think it peeked in Medieval Europe. I guess back in the day you really had to be careful about where your food and beverages came from. You might never know who was out to get you!

A ring like this one is often called a ‘poison’ ring, because you could easily and unobtrusively open the secret compartment in the lid and dump a bit of poison into the drink of your unwitting victim!’

This fantastic ring has a carved hard stone sardonyx cameo that’s carved in the shape of a shield. The stone is set into a frame which opens to reveal the hidden compartment within. The ring was handcrafted in 15 karat gold in about 1860; it was once fully hallmarked but the marks have worn and are no longer legible. This size 5.75 ring measures 15.2 mm north to south and 13.4 mm across at the face, the stone measures 12.4x9.6 mm. The ring weighs 4 grams and has been carefully acid tested to verify the gold content.
