It was a hidden treasure, a diamond in the rough, a needle in a haystack, if you will. It was the end of my trip and although I’d had a fabulous time, I was still looking for my own crown jewels. Instinct guided me into a tiny shop with dark fabric draping from the ceiling and tables of tchotchkes and shelves of curios. In London, one can learn a lot from a shopkeeper if you seem uninterested for long enough. There was a door in the back, she pointed it out to me. I feigned boredom as I opened it. And there she was, this beauty, this fortune.
This Art Nouveau silver brooch was handcrafted in England around 1900 by Murrle Bennett and Company. It’s an organic shape of hammered silver with an oval amethyst at the center and a natural pearl drop. It measures 38.5 x 26.2 mm and weighs 6.5 grams. The amethyst measures 13.5 x 11.7 x 6.4 mm and weighs approximately 4.82 carats. It bears the silver fineness mark, “950” and the maker’s mark, “MB CO”.
It was fate that brought me this brooch and it’s fate that you found it, too.
