The wife of King Edward III was Pillippa of Hainault. Her family name was Ostrevent, or ostrich. Together they bore a Son, Edward IV, know as ‘the Black Prince’. The Black Prince wore a shield which was an ode to his mother’s family, three white ostrich feathers on a field of sable. This triad of feathers got attached to the Prince of Wales and would go on to be used by many sons of the Kings of England, in the 17th century it became widely known as the badge solely of the Prince of Wales and has been ever since. It often has the slogan “Ich Dien” at the base, German for ‘I serve’.

When the Victorians began making brooches for the Scottish tourist trade, they took in many motifs of the day and turned them into “Scottish” brooches, most of which were actually made in England’s jewelry center of Birmingham, often with stones mined along the coasts of Scotland. This is the first time I’ve seen or had a Scottish brooch in the form of a Prince of Wales brooch. It is beautifully hand crafted, the stones cut and polished to precision. The sterling silver brooch is set with gray banded agate in shades ranging from blue to gray to beige to white, the colors are subtle and very beautiful.

This large brooch was made around 1880, it measures 64 mm across and 51 mm from north to south. It would be stunning on a jacket, a kilt, a plaid or even a thick sweater. This brooch weighs 31.2 grams. It is unmarked and tests as 925, or sterling, silver.
