It became so customary to wear and posses mourning jewelry that by the late 18th century most anyone of means would leave a provision in their will to have these rings made. Some were known to have over a hundred rings made and handed out upon their deaths. This one was crafted for the dearly departed Charles Purdy in 1808. Poor Charlie was only 20 when he died, so it's likely it was made for a mother, sister, or grieving widow.
A classic Greco-Roman Urn centers this endearing memorial ring. The inscription reads 'Charles Purdy OB 7 Sep 1808 AET 20’, immortalizing the memory of a young soul departed. The abbreviation 'OB' signifies 'obit' or 'died,' followed by the date of passing and the age at death. The fact that they didn't pay as much attention to birth dates as they did to death dates is a stark reminder of the fragility of life in times past. Charles Purdy's abbreviated life span, only twenty years, leaves one to ponder the brevity of existence and the legacy one leaves behind.
This lovely ring tests as about 12 karat gold (because back then they used what they had), it has wonderful black enamel and a great neoclassical style. The shaped shoulders and scrolling mounting are all definitive in their revival style. The enamel on this ring is in slightly rough condition. It weighs 3.7 grams. It's a US size 7 and would be quite difficult to size. The ring's dimensions, measuring 14.5 x 15.5 x 2 mm with a band width of 4.5 mm. It is a truly outstanding example of a Georgian Mourning ring. The enamel of this ring is a little bit rough, but only really shows from very close up, I forgave it because of the wonderful golden urn motif.
Despite the ravages of time, this Georgian mourning ring stands as a timeless testament to love, loss, and the enduring human spirit. This ring remains remarkably intact, a testament to its enduring quality. It serves as a beautiful ring and a link to the past, where the rituals of mourning were both solemn and cherished.
