Antique Pendant Carved Amethyst Pear with 15k Gold Mounting

The ancient Chinese believed that the pear was a symbol of immortality. Pear trees are long lived and productive and in many Chinese stories the gift of pears is used as an example of kindness and generosity.
This wonderfully carved amethyst pear is smooth and heavy and just all around wonderful. The stone is a richly colored purple amethyst and it is capped with a hand crafted, 15 karat gold cap and bale. The pendant measures 55 mm long and 24 mm across at the widest point, it is 23 mm thick and weighs 30.8 grams. This pendant does not come with a chain, it is unmarked but has been carefully acid tested.
This pendant was made in England around 1900, but it’s probable that the stone itself was brought back from a Grand Tour that included the Orient.
