He chose her on a quiet evening, when the gas lamps had just been lit and the world felt hushed and expectant. Perhaps it was after a supper party, or a long walk beneath budding trees, when courage finally found him. From his pocket came this ring, its emerald glowing like fresh spring leaves after rain, framed by softly flashing diamonds that caught the candlelight just so. In the early Victorian era, jewels were not merely adornments; they were declarations of devotion. This was a ring made for such a moment, a promise spoken in gold and silver, meant to be worn daily as a reminder of love newly pledged.
Handcrafted in continental Europe around 1840–1850, this early Victorian emerald and diamond ring is made of rich 18 karat gold with a traditional silver-topped setting for the diamonds. At its center rests a vivid natural emerald measuring approximately 4 x 5 x 3.1 mm, weighing about 0.5 carats, its color deep and alive, and very likely untreated, as was customary for stones of this period. Surrounding it are eight antique diamonds in wonderfully varied early cuts, including mazarine cuts and early Old European cuts — each hand-shaped, each reflecting light differently, giving the ring its distinctive, softly flickering sparkle. Due to their irregular early faceting, the diamonds’ combined weight is difficult to calculate precisely, but together they create a luminous halo around the emerald. The ring is marked “18c,” confirming its 18 karat gold content, and is most likely continental rather than English in origin. It weighs 5.2 grams and is currently a US size 7.25.
There is something profoundly intimate about jewelry from this era. It carries the quiet bravery of first proposals, the elegance of handwritten letters, and the romance of a world where love stories unfolded slowly. This is not simply an antique emerald and diamond ring — it is a survivor of nearly two centuries, still radiant, still ready to begin its next chapter.
