I bought this lovely ring in Amsterdam, in a tiny shop with a big window in the front that looked out on the Prinsengracht, the Prince's Canal. It was a gorgeous early spring day and the trees outside were just touched with green, like an impressionist painting. The sun was streaming in the front window and when I picked up this ring I thought it was pretty, but when I moved it into the sunlight and it revealed its hidden star, I fell just a little bit in love.

This hand made beauty features an incredibly highly domed star ruby set into a soft warm textile of gold, it is hard not to touch it as it has a wonderful feel. The ring is 18 karat yellow gold and the ruby measures 6.3 mm north to south and 6.6 mm across by 6 mm high for a carat weight of about 2.5 carats. The overall width of the band at the widest point is 9.5 mm and it tapers down to 3 mm at the back of the band, it sits 7.5 mm off the finger at the tip of the stone. Stars are created in gems when tiny fibers of rutile intersect inside the stone and cause an optical phenomenon known as 'asterism'. Asterism is much more common in sapphires than in rubies, so I was truly tickled to come across this example. It is currently a US size 7 but could be re-sized a bit in either direction, it weighs 7.2 grams. It has been acid tested to verify the gold content.
