He was young in the first photograph, standing straight in his uniform with the serious expression expected of a man before a camera. Years passed. The uniform disappeared, his face softened and age settled in, and someone who loved him kept both versions of the man together. Young on one side, older on the other, two moments from a single life held inside a little gold locket. We cannot know for certain that the photographs show the same man, but I rather like believing they do.

Dating to 1906, this wonderfully simple Edwardian photo locket was crafted in Birmingham as a pair of circular 9 karat gold frames hinged together, with glass protecting a black and white photograph on each side. It measures 41.3 millimeters from top to bottom including the bow, 32.7 millimeters across and 4.3 millimeters deep, and weighs 6.75 grams including the photographs and glass. It is fully hallmarked “9” and “.375” for 9 karat gold, the Birmingham anchor, the date letter “g” for 1906 and the maker’s mark “A&C.”
