She carried a tiny piece of her baby with her wherever she went. A soft curl of hair, carefully clipped and tied, rested inside this silver locket, a precious little memento kept close to her heart. On the outside, a baby sits safely in a bird’s nest while a watchful bird perches nearby, surrounded by trees, flowers and a little house in the distance. It was 1880, and the imagery could hardly be sweeter: home, motherhood and a cherished child tucked safely into the nest. The little curl is gone now, along with the name of the woman who treasured it, but the tenderness of its purpose remains.
Handcrafted in France around 1880, this wonderfully unusual silver locket is beautifully engraved on both sides with the same charming scene of a baby seated in a bird’s nest, a small bird nearby and a miniature landscape of trees, flowers and a distant house. The oval case opens with a sliding mechanism to reveal a fabric lined compartment, perfectly suited to holding a lock of hair or another tiny keepsake, on one side and its original mirror on the other. The mirror shows expected deterioration to the silvering from age, adding to the locket’s wonderfully timeworn character. It bears the maker’s mark “MP” and measures 63.5 millimeters from top to bottom including the suspension ring, 38.5 millimeters across and 12 millimeters deep. It weighs 16.58 grams. The chain shown in the photographs is not included.
The little curl may be gone, but the love that gave this locket meaning is still written all over it.
