Antique Scottish Agate Silver Picture Frame Edinburgh 1909

In Scotland, 1909, color photography was a new occurrence. In fact, one year earlier, Gabriel Lippmann won the Nobel Prize in Physics for inventing a method of reproducing colors by photography, based on the interference phenomenon. It’s really no coincidence that picture frames were a valued item. What better way to celebrate a moment in time that with a photograph in a sturdy frame? This antique Scottish picture frame was handcrafted in Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, in 1909. That was also the year that the delectable scotch whisky, Jonnie Walker, was introduced to the world. And it was the year that the Harris Tweed trademark was registered, and fashion was never the same again.

This beautiful and handsome picture frame features a shield shape set with colorful agate stones – from yellow, to orange, to black. A silver crown sits on top, surrounded by two regal basket-hilted swords, protecting this coat of arms. It measures 77.3 x 73.3 x 18.2 mm and weighs 41.6 grams. It is hallmarked with the letter year code, ‘D’, for 1909, a Scottish Thistle Mark, and the Triple Towered Castle mark. There is also a faded maker’s mark ending in ‘.F’. This piece has been acid tested.

Savor your treasured moments in a picture and show them off with this Scottish frame.
