She chooses the vivid ring before fastening her coat, its fiery color a cheerful companion to the grey morning. At the gallery, her hand pauses over the exhibition catalogue, and a friend leans closer to admire it. A little painting in silver, she calls it, turning her hand so the light travels across its surface.
Handcrafted around 1910, this sterling silver ring centers an elongated marquise enamel panel, its glowing red ground mottled with teal green and darker accents. The colors form an irregular, painterly pattern within a sculpted silver border, while small flowers adorn the shoulders and split details lead into the band. The face of the ring measures 24 millimeters north to south and 18 millimeters across, rising 4.6 millimeters off the finger, with a band width of 2 millimeters at the back. It weighs 4.6 grams, is a US size 7.5, and bears the marks “STERLING” and “SILVER.”
