She fastened the last button of her fuchsia silk blouse and slipped the pearl and ruby ring onto her finger. In the morning light, its little rubie echoed the color of her sleeves, while the pearls glowed softly against the gold. It was the jewel she reached for when the day called for something quietly beautiful.
Handcrafted around 1900 and bearing Birmingham marks, this 15 karat gold ring pairs six graduated pearls with four point set rubies. The pearls measure 2 millimeters, 2.5 millimeters, and 3 millimeters in diameter, with two of each size, while the four rubies each measure approximately 1.7 millimeters in diameter. The face of the ring measures 8.3 millimeters north to south and 13 millimeters across, sitting 2.9 millimeters off the finger, with a band width of 2.5 millimeters. It weighs 2.5 grams and is a US size 6.875, just shy of size 7. Inside the band are the maker’s mark “R.N,” “15” and “.625” for 15 karat gold, the Birmingham anchor, and an unusual deeply impressed, rounded “a” stamp.
The soft luster of pearls and small touches of rich pink give this ring a gentle charm, beautifully complemented by the warmth of gold. A lovely choice for someone who finds as much pleasure in the delicate details of an antique as in its sparkle.
