Who first wore this ring more than 130 years ago? Was it an engagement ring, offered by a nervous young man who had saved for the extravagance of 18 karat gold and three diamonds, or an anniversary gift marking years already spent together? We’ll never know, but I love imagining those old cut diamonds sparkling by candlelight, each one surrounded by a golden star, and wondering about all the hands this ring passed through before finding its way to us.
Made around 1890, this beautiful Victorian gypsy ring holds three graduated old cut diamonds in deeply engraved starburst settings, with scrolling hand engraved flourishes sweeping across the warm 18 karat gold. The central diamond measures 3 by 3 by 1.9 millimeters and weighs approximately .11 carat, while the two side diamonds measure 2.5 by 2.5 by 2 millimeters each and have a combined weight of approximately .16 carat, for a total estimated diamond weight of .27 carat. The ring is a US size 6.5 and is hallmarked “18CT.” The face of the ring measures 5.7 millimeters north to south, 19 millimeters across and sits 2.1 millimeters off the finger. The band measures 1.7 millimeters wide at the back.
