Antique Victorian Amethyst Pearl Pendant 15k Gold

If you were a lady of means in Victorian England and your husband passed away, you would be expected to be in a period of fully mourning for two years. For the first year you would not go out to social events, you would wear only black, and it had better not be shiny. For the next two years you could add back in some gray and maybe some purple and a bit of white, your period of ‘half-mourning’. A jewel like this would probably have been worn originally by just such a lady in her half-mourning phase. You needn’t wear it with black or even gray, you can rock it with jeans and a tee shirt or a flowing sundress; it’ll be happy either way.

This Victorian beauty was hand crafted around 1890 of 15 karat yellow gold and is set with a richly violet amethyst of wonderful proportion. The center stone measures 17 mm across and 11 mm deep and weighs about 15.16 carats. The stunning amethyst is surrounded by 54 creamy white pearls and the whole thing measures 39.3 mm from top to bottom and 28.8 mm across. This beautiful jewel is marked to the reverse with the makers mark ‘J.S’ and ’15ct’ to indicate the gold content.
