Handcrafted in about 1890, this low karat, garnet-gold brooch is set with seventy-nine garnets in closed-back settings, including a 14 x 9 mm cabochon and an 8 x 8 mm cabochon forming the body. The piece measures 31 mm north to south, 55.2 mm across the wingspan, and 10 mm deep, with a total weight of 7.6 grams. There are no hallmarks, but the craftsmanship and construction are exactly right for the period.
