Some rings seem made for grand occasions, but this one feels as though it was meant to become part of someone’s life. I imagine it on the hand of a woman at the turn of the century, worn to breakfast and dinner, on ordinary Tuesdays and important Sundays, its three little diamonds catching the light as she went about her day. Perhaps it was a gift from someone who knew her well enough to choose something beautiful but practical, a ring she wouldn’t have to save for best. More than a century later, it still has that wonderful quality of a jewel meant to be lived in.

Dating to around 1900, this late Victorian ring is crafted in warm 18 karat gold, with a broad, softly rounded face set with three old cut diamonds. Each diamond sits within a hand engraved starburst, with especially lively engraving radiating around the center stone and smaller diamonds sparkling to either side. The central diamond measures 2 by 2 by 1.4 millimeters and weighs approximately .04 carat, while the two side diamonds measure 1.5 by 1.5 by 1.1 millimeters each and have a combined weight of approximately .04 carat, for a total estimated diamond weight of .08 carat. The face of the ring measures 8 millimeters north to south, 15 millimeters across and sits 2.1 millimeters off the finger. The band measures 2.6 millimeters wide at the back. This ring is a US size 7.25 and weighs 2.9 grams. It bears no hallmarks and has been professionally tested as 18 karat gold.
