There is something wonderfully Victorian about carrying a compass close to your heart. A tiny instrument to point you home, set into a material made to look like a sky filled with stars. Dating to around 1880, long before GPS took over the role of directing us, this charming little compass is surrounded by richly sparkling goldstone, cut into a crisp octagonal shape. Goldstone is a man made glass, filled with countless tiny metallic crystals; traditionally copper, in this warm reddish brown variety. The result is extraordinary in the light, every movement brings another flicker of coppery gold from within.

At the center sits a miniature working style compass beneath its domed crystal, complete with a wonderfully detailed compass rose. The combination seems almost too perfect, a compass surrounded by something that looks like a miniature night sky. The compass measures 26.5 millimeters from top to bottom including the bale, 19.4 millimeters across and 8.2 millimeters deep. It weighs 5.64 grams. Made originally as a useful little watch chain accessory, it is equally wonderful worn today as a pendant.

A delightful Victorian curiosity, part jewel, part instrument, and perhaps the perfect talisman for someone finding their own way.
