It was late evening when he gave it to her, in England, in the final years of the Victorian era. The lamps were lit, the house quiet at last, and she stood near the window when he spoke her name. From his pocket he produced a keeper ring, English and fashioned in warm nine karat gold, its braided form glowing softly in the lamplight. He had chosen it carefully, a Birmingham-made ring meant to hold another ring in place, a symbol of constancy and intention. He told her simply that he wished to keep her — not in haste, but in life. Handcrafted in England and fully hallmarked in Birmingham in 1889, this keeper ring is made of rosy 9 karat gold and bears the “9” and “375” fineness marks, the anchor town mark, the date letter “p,” and the maker’s mark “J.M.” The ring measures approximately 8 millimeters north to south and 19 millimeters across, with a depth of about 2.7 millimeters, tapering to approximately 3.6 millimeters at the back of the band. It weighs 3.51 grams and is a US size 7.
