It begins on a winter evening in 1880, the kind of night when the moon hangs low and sharp above the rooftops, casting its pale curve across frosted glass. A young woman stands before her mirror, the last of the candlelight trembling around her, and lifts this crescent-shaped brooch to her collar. As she pins it into place, the tiny diamond bird perched along its arc seems almost to stir—caught forever in that breathless moment between flight and song—while the spray of diamond blossoms curls around it like a bouquet gathered in haste on the way to a long-awaited dance. When she steps out into the night, the jewels catch the gaslight in glints and sparks, as if carrying a little piece of the moon with her into the ballroom below.

Hand crafted in about 1880, this brooch is made of 15 karat gold with diamonds set in silver, as was traditional of the period. The 37 old European cut diamonds—bright, lively, and full of that unmistakable Victorian charm—add up to approximately 3.1 carats in total weight. The brooch measures 31.4 mm north to south, 28.8 mm across, and is 8.7 mm deep. It weighs 8.35 grams. The removable pin stem and small screw hole on the reverse indicate that it once formed part of a parure; it could be easily converted now to wear as a pendant should you wish.

It is the sort of piece that feels destined for someone who delights in small, magical details—someone who knows that even a crescent moon and a tiny bird can carry entire worlds within them. Wear it when you want to feel luminous, a little enchanted, and very much like the heroine of your own story.
