Victorian Essex Crystal Pug Dog Pendant

I like to think of them as the original three dimensional paintings and in a way they were. Cameos gave a feeling of depth, carvings, repousse work, but most especially jewels like this, the wonderful Essex crystal is a beautifully carved and reverse painted pug dog wearing a little gold and and blue collar. He’s got lots of personality in his sparkling little eyes.
The crystal is actually made by carving out the design in a cabochon of rock crystal and then painting the inside of the carving, in this case it’s backed with another piece of crystal. The crystal is set into a thick frame of 15 karat gold, it measures 23.3 mm long and 17 mm wide and is 7.5 mm thick, it weighs 3.8 grams. The pendant is unmarked but we’ve acid tested it as 15 karat gold.
